About Jim Hamlin Photography

I live in Western Colorado on the Grand Mesa National Scenic and Historic Byway near Grand Junction. Although I specialize in landscape photography, I also do wedding and portrait photography and enjoy shooting flower scenics, macros, events, and wildlife.

My photography experience began in the Front Range and central mountains of Colorado in the early 1980's while living in Bailey and, later, in Conifer in the foothills of the Rockies outside Denver. My family gave me my first “real” camera, a Pentax ME Super. I was an early adopter of digital photo technology, moving to an Olympus C-2100UZ in the early 90’s. I graduated into the Panasonic LUMIX prosumer superzoom line with a DMC-FZ10, an FZ30, and then the FZ50. Returning in spring 2008 to my photographic roots, the Pentax K20D 14.6 megapixel DSLR was my primary camera for over three years and I still use it today for foul weather shooting due to it's superior moisture protection. In the summer of 2011, I purchased a new Nikon D-5100 and that has become my primary shooter today.

I have traveled extensively throughout the western US and Canada, shooting photographs along the way. My favorite subjects are the lands, seas, and skies.

In the summer of 2010, I opened a small photo gallery, available by appointment, in my home near Mesa.  If you are in the area or live nearby, I would welcome your visit to see my work.  Since I shoot exclusively digital, the gallery includes the capability to display digital images as well as my printed and framed products for sale.  Contact me at 970-314-5888 to arrange an appointment.

Photographing the Outdoor World

Outdoor photography presents many challenges and many opportunities. One must understand and appreciate the rhythms of the natural world in order to capture the best images. Of course, being in the right place at the right time is essential. But one must know where the right place is and when the right time might be for that location and subject. Not enough can be said also about "photographer's luck". Many pieces must come together to make that great photo!

Technical Considerations

My understanding of the equipment, photographic techniques, and digital image processing continues to grow as I work. There is much to experience and to learn.
